This stood out like a sore thumb in amongst the tat at a flea market I frequent. A young girl was selling them. I asked her "can I see those bathers please". She heard "can I see those ninonanos please". It seems I was speaking martian. Swimmers I sighed. Ohh! Her head adjusted to centre position and handed them over.
In their day about the late 40's they were swimsuits, in my day, bathers.
Here is a link for Martin White swimwear. Gorgeous or what.

They are stunning!
ReplyDeleteI was quite bilingual growing up (for a Western Qld-er) - we alternated between bathers/swimmers/togs and knew exactly what we were refering to! Clearly I was edumacated pretty good.....
Hi Linda!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't believe these when I saw them yesterday. Amazing to look at and amazing to feel. I wondered at first if they were a stage outfit--they could easily have been.
In the western suburbs of Sydney and social circles I grew up in they were called "swimmers" or the full "swimming costume", although the bikini was called just that. I didn't strike bather until I went away to Wagga for College--where I felt bathers seemed to be more a country and Victorian word. And yes, togs was also used.
